Room Ideas

We have a dining room in our house that never gets used.  I mean EVER.  We have actually sat down to eat in it for one Thanksgiving since we moved in here three years ago.  We have had Super Bowl parties and summer bbq's in which we would lay food out on the table but as far as normal use, it just doesn't happen.  We have an eat-in kitchen and that is where we have all of our meals.

View from Scott's Office.  Notice all of the Christmas presents on the table?  If you want to know why all of the chairs are on their sides, you can read about it HERE.

View from family room.  Scott's office is to the left of the wood floor.

View from dining room into the kitchen.  The bathroom and stairwell are in the middle of a large circle connecting the dining room, kitchen, family room, foyer.  See the chairs in the kitchen, too?

I would like to utilize this room but I cannot figure out a good use for it.  For those of you who haven't seen my house (most of you), let me give you some details:

*Downstairs consists of 1 large room that is a kitchen/family room combo, 1 room is Scott's office, and then the dining room.  There is also a bathroom and laundry room downstairs.

*Upstairs consists of 4 bedrooms, a playroom and a guest bathroom.

So, I would love to make this a craft area for me but with Caleb being so little and in to everything and Gracie still being in to everything, I think I would end up frazzled and upset when all of my stuff got ruined, written on, torn into shred, etc.

I've also thought about a sitting room but, in all honesty, I don't think that would get used either.  I'm not opposed to putting a big comfy chair in there to read in but it still needs a "purpose".

Any ideas?

  1. What about making it a sort of library? I don't know how many books you have, etc., but it may be neat to start small and buy bookshelves for what you have ... you could even move dvds, etc. in there. Get a big comfy chair for yourself and then some bean bag chairs or something for the kiddos :)

  2. LOVE this idea, Michelle! I never would have thought of it!

  3. I love the library idea, too! Or at least a study/quiet area for you and/or the kids! Your house seems enormous!

PS- I have loved catching up on all of your posts! Your blog has become so fabulous!

  4. Well, I see library has already been suggested, but that was my first thought as well. You already have the piano in there. Just get a couple bookshelves and a comfy chair or two.
You asked how I got people to offer advice about my room...I originally posted it to a Decorating Dilemmas linky party specifically for that purpose. It was hosted by Serenity Now, and she does it from time to time.

  5. That will look awesome as a library. Have you started on it yet? Let me know if you like it!
